JBT, or Junior Basic Training, is a diploma-level teacher education programme recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). The course is designed for candidates who wish to teach at the primary level (Classes 1–5) in government and private schools across India. After completion, graduates can appear for state-level Teacher Eligibility Tests (TET).
Many states have renamed JBT to D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education), but the curriculum, eligibility, and career outcomes remain the same. States like Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan still popularly use the term JBT.
JBT Course Details & Syllabus
The two-year curriculum blends theory with classroom practice. Subjects include Child Development & Psychology, Teaching Methodologies, Mathematics Pedagogy, Environmental Studies, Language Teaching, Art & Craft, and Physical Education. A mandatory internship in a primary school is a key component.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must pass 12th from a recognised board with at least 50% marks (45% for reserved categories). Admission is typically through merit counselling or state entrance test. Age limit: 18–28 years (varies by state).
Career Scope & Salary
JBT graduates work as primary teachers in government, aided, and private schools. Government salary ranges from ₹25,000–₹45,000/month. JBT holders can also pursue B.Ed for senior teaching or education administration roles.
